Location information for Kempten

Kempten used to be an Imperial free city which belonged to the Holy Roman Empire up to the Napoleonic era. Today, it is a modern city on the Iller's riverbanks and right at the foot of the Allgau Alps. Downtown Kempten is a good place to get started in touring the city's attractions to learn more about its history and cultural heritage.

The city is part of the main railway line running from Lindau to Nuremburg so it is accessible via the Deutsche Bahn from Munich, Nuremburg, Ulm, Lindau, and Augsburg. It takes about one to two hours to reach Kempten from Munich, and the train station conveniently lies in the downtown area.

Much of Kempten's town center is pedestrianized but there are buses and taxis operating around it to help you access other parts of the city. To save money, car hire in Kempten Downtown can be arranged. Several attractions await the visitor in Kempten and these include a plethora of churches around the city.

The Alpine Museum, the St. Lorenz Basilica, and the Archaeological Park Cambodunum are among the main attractions to see in Kempten. To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.
