Jerusalem is considered by many to be the capital of Israel, even if this is not recognized by the international community. Jerusalem hosts three of the world's biggest religions; Islam, Judaism and Christianity. As such, there is a large number of holy sites to occupy time in the city.
Most travelers fly to Ben Gurion Airport, near Tel Aviv. Passengers arriving here might want to hire a vehicle on arrival. However, those coming overland might prefer to arrange cheap car hire in Jerusalem Downtown. There are trains from several Israeli destinations, as well as Ben Gurion Airport. The Jaffa-Jerusalem route is one of the most scenic in the country.
In fact, the scenery is the biggest reason to take the train in Israel; buses are much more efficient. The Central Bus Station is a long walk from the downtown areas, so travelers arriving by this method should take a local bus instead. However, local buses don't operate from dusk on Fridays to dusk on Saturdays.
Given that Jerusalem buses don't run on Saturdays, it makes car hire in Jerusalem Downtown all the more attractive. However visitors will find that they have to explore the Old Town on foot, as cars are prohibited on many of the district's narrow lanes and alleys.
Outside the city, travelers are able to drive south to Bethlehem, birthplace of Jesus Christ. Bethlehem also attracts Jewish pilgrims who come to visit the birthplace of King David. It shouldn't take more than 20 minutes to get here with car rental in Jerusalem Downtown. However, travelers should factor in waiting times at checkpoints in and out of Bethlehem; the city is administered by the Palestinian Authority.
