Mirandela is a city in the north of Portugal. It's one of several cities in the Tras-os-Montes region, many of which are becoming increasingly popular with tourists. Mirandela is a good base for exploring other destinations in the region, such as Bragança, Miranda and Chaves. Public transport is limited, so it's recommended that travelers arrange car rental in Mirandela on arrival.

Mirandela is centered on the Tua River, which is crossed by four bridges. One of the bridges forms a reservoir which is used for water sports. An international jet skiing competition is even held here. Mirandela is a romantic city; it's not uncommon to see young couples strolling down the riverside, or in Riverside Park.

Downtown Mirandela has a couple of attractions, including the Matrix Church tower and the town hall. Visitors should make sure they climb Church Hill for one of the best views of the city. Mirandela is also famous for its food, particularly alheiras'. Alheiras' is a type of Portuguese sausage and the best alheiras' in Portugal are said to come from Mirandela.

Bragança is the region's capital and is just one hour north with cheap car rental in Mirandela. The city lies on the edge of Montesinho National Park, yet there are enough attractions in downtown Bragança to entertain visitors for a while. The Cidadela medieval village is the city's main attraction.

Alternatively, Chaves is around an hour away with car rental in Mirandela. This historical city is located 52kms northwest of Mirandela, on N213.
