Location information for Viseu

Viseu is a scenic destination in the Portuguese mountains. The city is located in the Beira Alta and is a regional centre for this part of central Portugal. The Beira Alta is set between two mountain ranges; the Serra do Caramulo and the Serra da Estrela. This charming city attracts visitors heading to the Dao wine region, as well as Viseu's Old Quarter (Centro Historico).

The best way to get to Viseu is by flying to Porto and taking a long-distance bus. This route is operated by Rede/Expressos and should take a couple of hours. However, there are buses from other major Portuguese cities, as well as destinations in Spain. Viseu doesn't have its own railroad station.

Cheap car rental in Viseu is the best way to get around most of the downtown district. Roads are well-signed and there is a useful ring road which has no less than 12 access points to the city. However, walking is the best way to get around the Old Quarter and soak up the atmosphere of its medieval streets.

Another interesting form of transport in Viseu is the new funicular train. Opened in 2009, the train links the upper city (Adro da Se) with the lower city (The Forum). Those who like unique forms of public transport will enjoy the trip. Outside Viseu, travelers can easily reach the Atlantic coast with car rental in Viseu. The city is served by the A25 from both the east and west.

Visitors interested in the wine industry should drive south, to Nelas, with car rental in Viseu. This is one of the most scenic drives in the region and should take around 30 minutes without stopping. However, travelers should take the opportunity to stop at some of the region's vineyards on the way.
