Douglas is the capital of the Isle of Man, a small island located in the middle of the Irish Sea. The Isle of Man is a crown dependency of the UK. That means it is considered part of the UK, but is allowed to have its own government and laws. Some travelers fly to Ronaldsway, 15kms from Douglas, and then hire a car. However, most travelers get here by ferry from mainland UK and Ireland.
Ferries depart from Liverpool and Heysham at all times of the year. There are other services from Dublin and Belfast, but they may have a more restricted service. Travelers sailing directly to Douglas will find cheap car hire in Douglas Downtown most useful.
Much of downtown Douglas is easy to cover on foot. Alternatively, visitors can use the unique horseback tram which plies they city's streets. However, car hire in Douglas Downtown is the most efficient way to get to other places on the island.
Many visitors make the short drive to Peel, on the other side of the Isle of Man. It should take around 25 minutes with car rental in Douglas Downtown. The main attraction in Peel is Peel Castle; it's well worth parking in town and strolling down to the island which the castle lies on. Parts of the castle are more than 1,000 years old.
Farther afield, its well worth driving south to Castletown. As the name suggests, it is home to another beautiful castle, Rushen Castle. In fact, it might be worth making Castletown an overnight trip; there are plenty of bed and breakfasts, as well as some excellent British pubs. However, like much of the island, accommodation can be at a premium during the TT rally.
