Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands; a group of British islands in the North Sea. Lerwick is the main gateway to the Shetlands, with a number of connections to the Scottish mainland and the Orkney Islands. British Airways offers regular flights to Sumburgh Airport, 30 miles to the south of the capital.

British Airways currently flies here from three of Scotland's biggest cities; Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh. In addition there are flights from Kirkwall, on the Orkney Islands, as well as Wick, in the far north of Scotland. A cheaper way to get here could be by taking a one of the regular Northlink Ferries from Aberdeen.

There are several firms which offer cheap car rental in Lerwick Downtown. Conveniently, all of them offer a collection service from both the airport and the ferry terminal. Car rental in Lerwick Downtown can be a great way to explore the smaller Shetland Islands; many of them are served by vehicle ferries.

Given that Lerwick is the capital of the Shetlands, it's unsurprising that it has some of the best shopping facilities. The town has a good mix of independent retailers and larger shopping malls. In addition, there's also some decent nightlife. Bars and pubs range from traditional working men's taverns, to swankier hotel bars.

Visitors interested in history should drive to Scalloway, Shetland's ancient capital. Scalloway is just six miles away with car rental in Lerwick Downtown. In addition, it's also worth taking the ferry to the Noss nature reserve. Some of the wildlife, such as whales, otters and puffins, is simply breathtaking.

What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

Are there any additional costs?

Our rates are all-inclusive. Our reservation department will inform you in advance should additional costs apply. You can always cancel your booking free of charge if you do not agree (this must be done at least 48 hours prior to the start of the car hire period).

What kind of insurance is applicable to my car rental?

In general, Liability Insurance, Fire Insurance, All-Risks Insurance and Theft Insurance are included in the cost of your rental car.
