Southend is a traditional seaside resort, 40 miles from the British capital, London. In the 1950s and 1960s, working-class Londoners flocked here in their droves, especially on bank holiday weekends. Nowadays, the crowds have lessened somewhat, but Southend's attempts at modernization hope to bring back the glory days to the town.

Southend is well-connected by road and rail. Travelers coming from London can take a train from Fenchurch Street to Southend Central. This station is most convenient for those visiting the promenade. Alternatively, there is another route to Southend Victoria, departing from London Liverpool Street.

Trains from London should take around one hour on either route. Alternatively, those flying to Southend Airport will find seasonal flights from Jersey, operated by Flybe. Much of Southend can be covered on foot, but car rental in Southend Downtown is recommended to those who would like to travel farther afield.

Those visitors who do choose car rental in Southend Downtown will find plenty of parking available. Much of it is located near the seafront and is reasonably priced. Many of Southend's attractions can be found near the old pier, including an aquarium, gardens and galleries. Visitors can also take a boat trip up the River Thames, which departs from a spot near the pier.

It's well worth driving west from Southend to Leigh-on-Sea. It's just three miles away with cheap car rental in Southend Downtown. It's a little quieter than Southend, catering to a slightly more mature clientele. Guests can visit the town's bird sanctuary, as well as Hadleigh Castle, an historic ruin with free parking.

 What do I need to do when picking up a car?

To pick up your car, you will need your voucher, passport, driver's license and a credit card. It is very important that your driver's license and credit card are in the same name as the main driver. Keep in mind that the local rental company will reserve a certain amount on your credit card as a deposit. This requires the PIN code for your credit card. If your driver's license is foreign (for example, in Chinese), you must bring a translation with you. Only your original passport and driver's license will be accepted - a copy is not sufficient.

 Are there any additional costs?
