Taunton is the main county town of Somerset, a county in the southwest of England. It's a decent town to spend a couple of days en route to more popular destinations in Devon and Cornwall. There are a few attractions in the town itself, while Glastonbury and the Cheddar Gorge make two excellent daytrips.

First Great Western and Virgin Trains operate all train services to Taunton. Virgin Trains depart from cities in to the north, such as Manchester, Birmingham, Leeds and Glasgow. On the other hand, travelers coming from London can use the First Great Western service from Paddington Station.

Traffic congestion can be a problem, but car rental in Taunton Downtown is still a worthwhile recommendation. There is a decent bus service during the week, but weekends see a vast reduction in the frequency of local buses. Attractions in the town include the Somerset County Museum, as well as horse racing at Taunton Racecourse.
